MOIRE HOUSE - 01.15.2023 - Upstate New York
The Moire House is an introverted retreat with a fluid entrance. The word moire means a surface with a “watered” appearance, but it is also used to describe an optical effect that is created when two similar patterns are passed over one another. The resulting “ripples” move with the viewer based on their viewpoint.
The perceptual effect of moire is created with the building’s unique facade. The overlapping burnt wooden dowels situationally conceal and reveal the interior spaces allowing for privacy, light, airflow and physical connectivity to be modulated.
The building’s operable features, a mechanized gate and massive sliding front doors, are levers that control the density of the moire pattern. They constitute a fluid framework that allows users to customize their living conditions day to day.
